Dog Training – How to Train Your Dog

Puppy Training Tips: Teaching Your Puppy Not To Jump On Other People

Aren’t puppies just the cutest thing when they come and greet us at the door every time we come home? We delight in seeing puppies jump and consider their welcome as a show of affection. That’s fine and good until the puppies start getting bigger and heavier and then the behavior becomes quite annoying, even dangerous.

It s never safe to have a jumping dog around the house, especially if you have little children who can easily be knocked down by a bigger dog. Training your puppy not to jump on people is important and dog training at home should be started while your dog is still a puppy. As early as six weeks, puppies can be home trained to acquire good dog behavior. They are also very playful and can easily get excited. Jumping is their way of greeting or saying that they want to play. But when puppies start getting bigger and had acquired the habit of jumping, they may pose danger to other people especially children.

Here are some ways you can teach your dog not to jump on people:

1. One way to teach your puppy not to jump on you is to move towards him the minute he tries to jump. This will get him off balanced and will stop him from jumping. When your dog jumps, it is his way of trying to get your attention. You have to teach him that there are other ways to catch your attention without causing any harm.

2. As your dog starts to jump, you can also walk away slowly and keep saying “stay.” After your dog obeys, give him a treat to show that staying on the floor gives him a better deal.

3. Be still. Don’t look or even talk to your dog but don’t push him away. He’ll get the message that he’s not getting a response from you. He will soon calm down and when this happens, ask him to “sit” and then reward him with a treat.

4. If your puppy is starting to get the habit of jumping uncontrollably on people when they come to the door, teach him that when the door rings, that’s a signal for him to sit or lie down. Whenever he gets the expected behavioral response, reward him with a treat.

Having a puppy at home can be such a joy. By starting him early on a dog training at home, you and your puppy will enjoy a better relationship.
